Containment and holding in psychology originates from Winnicot’s theory about child development. The mother or the primary caregiver holds the child emotionally when negative or destructive emotions operate. That implies that destructive impulses are openly expressed and the parent is able to survive them and through sensitive parenting redirect them to a more creative direction.
