      Dear friends and members,
I find this quote by Leo Tolstoy absolutely inspiring. I believe that gives a fresh and unique perspective of what love really is…
It also raises interesting questions, like: is there love without respect and respect without love?
What do you think? How such a perspective change the way you are thinking and respond in personal, social or professional relationships?

This is such an interesting topic. It implies that we should do things out of love. As I understand it, it means that love drives us to be respectful. If you are respectful out of other reasons (fear etc) it might imply oppression, manipulation even hidden aggression, not nice feelings to live with…
      Thank you for posting it
      Very inspiring…

I do not agree that these words are completely different, as if there is no respect there is no love. It says that respect is an absolute component of love

I think it is really nice.

It shows us how important is to know how to love…I guess when you love someone you don’t want to hurt him, you respect his feelings

In my view, this quote encourages us to love…just to love and encourage us to think about what real love is about.

      Hi Elissavet,

Thank you for posting such an interesting quote. I totally agree that when you love someone or sth you don’t need respect because respect is part of the love feeling. But what’s happening when you love but you are too scared to express it fully. Or if you haven’t learn how to love or if you don’t really know what love is?  You might cross the line…

So yes, this quote is so enlightening…

        Hi Maria,

        Thanks for your comments.

I agree with your interpretation. We cannot really separate love from respect.

I also agree that we are not all of us capable to love  fully. I think there are many reasons for that. We must also consider how we find a balance between respect towards the other person and our personal freedom.

Finally we may respect someone without loving him.

I cannot imagine love without respect but respect without love is possible.

Hello MariaKo. I will agree with you and I would say that respect without love is just fear with no real connection.

Annaana, this is a very interesting point, I think. Fear creates a distance indeed!

I think that such a demarcation make things easier for some people. You learn to respect older people, the law, the officers etc and this is how society can be functional.
