Epictetus said, “wealth consists not in having great possessions, but in having few wants”. Despite this, I find it hard to be content with what I have. I desire more. This leads me to feel guilty for wanting more. I blame myself for being unappreciative. Do you have any thoughts or advice on the subject?

      Hi Vassiliki,

Thank you for posting this interesting, intricate topic.
Prior to making any suggestions, I think there are several things that need clarification.

      1. In what ways does Epictetus define wealth? Is it material, emotional, or both? How would you interpret this quote?
      2. If you are unhappy with your life, then either you need to change it to make it better, or you hold the belief that unhappiness lies within you and you should find ways to heal your heart and mind. Which one best describes your situation?
      3. The picture you have of yourself does not seem to be a positive one. You blame yourself for feeling underappreciated. is this an idea that you developed yourself, or has it been imposed upon you by others? (e.g. friends, family, culture)

      Elissavet thanks for your reply.
I think it could be used both ways.
There’s not much I can do about it. I choose the second one.
Others say that my husband offers me almost everything. Even though he does, and although we are wealthy, I’d like more money, and a more loving husband. I don’t know. But I think the second question was very helpful, because it made me realize that I cannot expect others to make me happy. Maybe i should focus on my personal growth and stop being miserable and blaming others.
